Conversation with Li Po on the Nature of Existence
You said goodbye...
and I was left watching the river
flowing gently into heaven.
-- Li Po, "Saying Goodbye"
From where does your knowledge come?
the Yellow Crane Pavilion swoop of swallows black thistledown
Why do you speak like an oracle?
a thousand miles of frozen sky the land of Chu cloud-ghosts see
Does the world know enough of love?
an aging scholar in excile wide, blank night too old to climb terraces
What do you know of death?
rice-paper wall curve of clear rivers lonely sail, a knife in water
Where should we go from here?
banished immortals of Ch'ang-an green hill pushing up through stars
What is the meaning of it all?
nothing left but song hock a wedding ring for wine wagons clang
